All PEEC events are described on this page. There is no longer a separate Youth Calendar page. Ongoing clubs for children are listed at the bottom of the page. All PEEC events are open to interested children/teens, but some programs require that the child be accompanied by an adult. If you are uncertain whether an event will be suitable for your child, contact Programs@PajaritoEEC.org.

Camouflage for Kids and Families
March 13, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
Camouflage is one of the most amazing animal adaptations. Animals have evolved to use colors, patterns, and seasonal changes - among other adaptations to survive in the wild. We will explore camouflage among the animals that live in the Los Alamos area and sharpen our observation skills so that we can learn to identify a few of these mysterious creatures as they blend in with their habitat. 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Taught by Amy Roberts. $18 member families/$20 non-members families (up to 4 people).
Winter Wednesday: Big Horn Sheep of New Mexico
March 24, 7:00 p.m.
Join us for a fascinating talk about the story of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep in New Mexico by Elise Goldstein of New Mexico Game and Fish. Ms. Goldstein was our featured speaker at last year's PEECnic-Bandelier Nature Festival. The talk was so well received we've asked her to return to share with us in an indoor (hopefully easier to hear) environment. Family friendly. 7 p.m. FREE

Earth Day Hikes
April 17, 9:00 a.m.
April 18, 4:30 p.m.
April 24
April 17: Rory Gauthier will lead a hike to Dutchess Castle 9:00 AM. Meet at the Tsankawi parking lot at 9:00 AM. We will then get back into our cars and drive about 1/2 mile down the highway and park on the shoulder opposite the computer parking lot. From here, we will hike to Duchess Castle and north mesa to look at cavates and petroglyphs including one that depicts a conquistador on horseback. Hike is moderately strenuous, off trail and will require some scrambling up talus slopes. Bring hat, water and sunscreen and some food. We will be out for about three hours.
April 18: Chris Judson will lead a hike to the La Mesa Fire area. Meet at Ponderosa Campground at 4:30 PM. La Mesa Fire, 33 years later - In June of 1977 the La Mesa Fire left part of the area around the Ponderosa Campground looking like a moonscape, while part was hardly touched. Thirty-three years later, we'll walk through some of each area and see what the long-term environmental effects have been (be ready to feel encouraged!). About l mile, off-trail but easy walking, wear long pants and closed-toed shoes since there are lots of thorny plants along the way. Probably about an hour. Meet at the trailhead at Ponderosa Campground. No pets.
April 24: Sierra Club Hike led by Michael Di Rosa and Craig Martin. Meet at the High School parking lot (the large lot closes to Duane Smith Auditorium). We'll carpool from there and return to the high school and the festivities at PEEC.
All Earth Day hikes are FREE.
