Mammals of the Pajarito Plateau

Black Bear

Black Bear, Ursus americanus amblyceps

A common nocturnal visitor.

Mule Deer, Odocoileus hemionus

This is the common deer of the area. This one has antlers in springtime velvet.

Common Racoon, Procyon lotor

 

ringtail

Ringtail, Bassariscus astutus

A rarely-seen nighttime visitor. This one was photographed while raiding a hummingbird feeder on North Mesa.

Colorado Chipmunk, Neotamias quadrivittatus

 

Ermine weasel

Ermine Weasel, Mustela erminea muricus

This little cutie was photographed under the bird feeder at PEEC. Ermines are white in winter, brown in summer.

Red Squirrel

Red Squirrel, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus

The common name is spruce squirrel, pine squirrel, or red squirrel.
